Cleaning and Disinfecting your Card Reader

Your payment processing equipment contains sensitive electronics. Clean and disinfect it the right way to avoid damage.

We know you’re anxious to protect your customers and staff during the Covid outbreak. Part of your action plan is surely to disinfect surfaces to prevent transmission. Since your payment processing equipment is touched during every transaction, you’ll want to keep it clean – but also keep it intact and working correctly. Here’s how to do that:

Verifone Devices

Cleaning – Verifone devices should only be cleaned with water using a lightly damp microfiber cloth.

NOTE: Do not use solvents, detergents, or abrasive cleaners. Please refrain from vigorously shaking the devices to avoid triggering the built-in tamper alert, which renders the device unusable.

Disinfecting – After cleaning, the devices may be disinfected using an alcohol-based wipe or alcohol-based cleaner applied to a microfiber cloth.

NOTE: Do not spray, coat, or pour any disinfectant or other liquid directly onto the device.

CAUTION: Never use bleach, thinner, trichloroethylene, or ketone-based solvents (like acetone) – they can deteriorate plastic or rubber parts.

Ingenico Devices

Cleaning – Ingenico devices should be cleaned as follows:

  • Unplug the power supply, then unplug the remaining wires, cables, etc. from the device prior to cleaning.
  • Ingenico recommends using a lint-free soft cloth that is very slightly soaked with soapy water to clean the outside of the Terminal.

Disinfecting – To disinfect your Ingenico devices, here are your options:

  • Use a US EPA-recommended disinfectant that Ingenico has determined can be used to clean the outside of its Terminals:

– Sani-Cloth Germicidal Disposable Wipe.

– Sani-Cloth Germicidal Disposable Cloth.

– Formula 409 Antibacterial cleaner.

– Fantastik Antibacterial cleaner.

Any liquid cleaners should be sprayed into a lint free soft cloth and not directly on the Terminal. Although alcohol cleaning solutions (with at least isopropyl alcohol solution 70%) are recommended by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for disinfecting surfaces, those solutions cannot be used on all Ingenico Terminals:

– For non-Touch Terminals (which have a plastic lens) – isopropyl alcohol solution 70% cannot be used.

– For Touch Terminals (which have a glass display covering the touch screen) – isopropyl alcohol solution 70% can be used.

DO NOT:

  • Do not use solvents, detergents or abrasive products as such products may damage the Terminal’s plastic or electrical contacts.
  • Do not clean the Terminal’s electrical connections.
  • Do not spray cleaners directly onto the Terminal.
  • Avoid excessive wiping of the Terminal as it might cause damage to the Terminal.
  • Do not allow any moisture to enter Terminal openings or use aerosol sprays on the Terminals.
  • Do not put anything into the Terminal’s smart card reader slot.

Protective Plastic Covers

For more aggressive cleaning/disinfecting, we’re also offering protective spill covers for Verifone and Ingenico devices. These plastic covers will fit over your device, and protect it from cleaning/disinfecting liquids. Cost is $15 plus tax and shipping per device.

Here’s an example for the popular Verifone VX805:
